    Birthplace of Country Music® Museum Opening

    Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Malcolm J Wilson

    The Birthplace of Country Music® Museum, in affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, tells the story of our musical heritage. From the Bristol Sessions and beyond, our region continues to influence music around the world. Opening August 1, 2014, the museum will be a touchstone for visitors seeking comprehensive knowledge of the music of our region and Bristol's important role in the evolution of recorded music history.


    Northern Virginia

    Manassas - Aug 2 - Annual Manassas African-American Heritage Festival is an event that caters to children and adults alike that includes regional and local entertainment, food vendors, retail vendors, an antique car show, fashion/hair show, and local community service groups.

    Manassas - Aug 8-16 - Prince William County Fair - Come to the largest County Fair in the State of Virginia! Hundreds of animals, Interactive Agricultural Exhibits, Demonstraations, Thrill Rides, Family Rides, Agility and Dock Diving dogs and much more.

    Culpeper - Aug 13-17 - Horse Shows in the Sun: Winston National - A summer series of six horse shows at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia, Horse Shows in the Sun Culpeper offers hunter, jumper and equitation competitions in six all-weather rings. Each event hosts approximately 900 to 1,300 horses.

    Manassas - Aug 22-24 - Manassas Civil War Weekend - The annual Civil War Weekend in the City of Manassas will offer living history, tours, lectures, drama and much more for all ages at The Manassas Museum, in Old Town, and at Liberia Plantation.

    Leesburg - Aug 29-Sept 1 - Epicurience Virginia - A Wine & Food Festival Two Hundred Years in the Making: Loudoun’s Epicurience Virginia. Picture a food and wine festival so unique that no existing name quite fit. A food and wine experience so epic, in fact, that we’re calling it something completely new: Epicurience.



    Southern Virginia

    Alton - Aug 9-10 - Optima Batteries ChumpCar World Series "VIR 24-Hour Classic" - It will be a hot summer night at VIR when Chump Car returns with your favorite wacky “junkers n’ clunkers” 24-hr endurance race. This series is for gear-heads, for people who love driving and driving fast.

    Axton - Aug 9 - Annual Smith River Fest - Run, paddle and bike your way to fun at Smith River Fest! Paddle the river, participate in the 4.8 mile long river race and 5K Mud Run, browse vendor booths, enjoy children's activities, watch live demonstrations and much more.

    Alton - Aug 16 - Biscuitville 125-NASCAR K&N Pro Series East - The NASCAR K&N Pro Series is NASCAR’s top developmental series. Come watch the next generation of NASCAR stars as they hone their racing skills on VIR's legendary road course. 

    Martinsville - Aug 16 - Bluegrass at the Rives Concert Series - The Country Boys will be playing in this monthly concert series at the Rives Theatre. 

    Alton - Aug 22-24 - Oak Tree Grand Prix-TUDOR United SportsCar Championship -  This event will have a combined GT LeMans/GT Daytona race and a separate Prototype Challenge race. The Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and Lamborghini Super Trofeo series will also be returning.

    Boydton - Aug. 23 - Boydton's Big Bad BBQ Battle - Come enjoy our BBQ Battle, Corn-hole tournament, craft and merchandise vendors, and Street Dance in Historic Boydton, VA!



    Chesapeake Bay

    Kilmarnock - Jul 31 - Aug 9 - The Kilmarnock Volunteer Fireman's Carnival  may be the longest continually operating summer carnival in Virginia.  It's hometown charm at its finest. Nine fun-filled nights capped off with a car or truck raffle at its conclusion.


    Heart of Appalachia

    Hiltons - Aug 1-2 - Carter Family Traditional Music Festival - Music festival held the first weekend in August presented in honor of The Original Carter Family, the first family of country music, and commemorating the historic 1927 Bristol Recording Sessions.

    Tazewell - Aug 1-9 - Tazewell County Fair is one of Virginia's largest old-fashioned country fairs featuring, horse shows, dairy show, SEBRA bull riding, pig & dog races, lawnmower & go kart racing, figure 8 derby and demolition derby, pageants,  music concerts, crafts, exhibit center, carnival rides, food and much more.

    Breaks - Aug 30-Sept 1 - Tri-State Gospel Singing held is  at the Breaks Interstate Park Amphitheater on Labor Day weekend.   Well-known gospel groups will come from as many as ten different states, and local talent is also scheduled to perform.



    Central Virginia

    Richmond - Aug 7-10 - Richmond Jazz Festival - Altria presents the Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont. Come experience the world's best jazz, great food, outstanding wine, outdoor cigar lounge and the beautiful rolling hills of Maymont.

    Richmond - Aug 9 - Rockn' to Lockn'  an official Lockn’ Festival battle of the bands. This year, we’re giving fans a voice in choosing Virginia talent to showcase at the Festival. Rockn’ to Lockn’ is a five night event, over the course of the summer, that will culminate in a final contest on Saturday, August 9th at the RVA Theater.  Lockn' Music Festival at Oak Ridge Farm in Nelson County Virginia is a four day music festival, with an emphasis on stellar music, locally sourced food and sustainability

    Richmond - Aug 10 - Carytown Watermelon Festival - With 60 musicians, over 100 exhibitors, one of the largest kids areas of any festival on the east coast and all of the great Carytown style, the Carytown Watermelon Festival presented by Martin's has become the largest one day festival in the state of Virginia!

    Courtland - Aug 13-16 - Franklin-Southampton County Fair - Enjoy great local and special foods, home arts, exhibits, crafts, live stock shows, talent shows and the Queen's Pageant. The fair offers over 1,200 exhibits and attracts more than 10,000 people.

    Wintergreen - Aug 16 - 9th Annual Blue Ridge Mountain Music Fest features Nothin' Fancy, Sierra Hull, the Virginia Ramblers, and Kim and Jimbo Cary & Pete and Ellen Vigour. The Carys and the Vigours will be leading jamming sessions throughout the day.

     Roseland - Aug. 23 - Annual Virginia Craft Brewers Festival at Devils Backbone Brewing Company - Annual Virginia Craft Brewers Festival at Devils Backbone Brewing Company featuring the Virginia Craft Beer Cup Competition, live music, local food & overnight camping.

    Chesterfield - Aug 22-30 - Chesterfield County Fair- Annual fair with beauty pagents, live music, parade and agricultural education to celebrate Chesterfield County's history, heritage, culture and traditions by bringing the community together.

    Madison - Aug 30 - Taste of the Mountains Main Street Festival - Step back in time at the Annual Taste of the Mountains Main Street Festival. There will be arts and crafts, bands, ranging from alternative rock to folk music and bluegrass. Taste great regional foods!



    Shenandoah Valley


    Massanutten - Aug. 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 - Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre - Once Upon a Crime ('13 - '14) - Every Wednesday evening, Clever By Half Productions teams with Massanutten Resort to present the interactive environmental murder mystery dinner theater, Once Upon a Crime, at the Conference Center.

    Hampton - Aug 1-3 - Hampton Cup Regatta - Speed into aquatic action as the 89th Annual Hampton Cup Regatta , the oldest continuously running hydroplane boat race in the country, returns to Mill Creek in Hampton.

    Chesapeake - Aug 9 - The Chesapeake Criterium Bike Race - This is a great opportunity for families to experience top level bike racing in Chesapeake! There will be races for all United States Cycling Federation Categories.

    Norfolk - Aug 16 - Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music Festival - The sun goes down, the stars come out, and the largest outdoor dance floor in Hampton Roads heats up at the Annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Festival.

    Virginia Beach - Aug. 17-24 - East Coast Surfing Championships - Held annually for 52 years in Virginia Beach, the Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans is North America's oldest - and WORLD's second oldest - continuously-run surfing contest.

    Surry - Aug 23-24 - Surry County African American Festival and Family Reunion - The African-American Heritage Society hosts the annual African-American Festival and Family Reunion which celebrates the African American family and the contributions of people of African decent to the building of America. You are invited to attend and join in the celebration by telling your family's story and participating in the fun activities.

    Virginia Beach - Aug. 22-24 - FunkFest - FunkFest - a full-blown three-day celebration with lively entertainment, cultural presentations, children's activities, .food, art, and shopping. FunkFest features music generated over the years by influential legends such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Ohio Players.

    Virginia Beach - Aug 29-31 - American Music Festival - The sounds of rock, jazz, country, blues, R&;B and more flood the oceanfront for three sun-filled days over Labor Day Weekend. The largest outdoor musical event on the East coast, the American Music Festival brings together local, regional and national acts to play on a gigantic 60-foot wide and 60-foot tall stage on the beach at 5th Street as well as stages in all parks along the beautiful oceanfront.



    Eastern Shore

    Chincoteague Island - Jul 28-Aug 2 - Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman's Carnival - Rides, Fun, and Food! The Fireman's Carnival leads up to the world famous Pony Swim and Auction. 



    Blue Ridge Highlands

    Blacksburg - Aug. 1-2 - Steppin' Out - Blacksburg's annual Steppin' Out festival takes to the streets of the downtown every first weekend in August.  Pedestrians fill the colorful village center to enjoy craft vendors, sidewalk sales, festival foods, and three stages of live entertainment.

    Galax - Aug 2-9 - Galax Old Fiddlers Convention -  The City of Galax has the world tapping its feet as the Old Fiddlers Convention takes place in Felts Park. Galax has been designated the Worlds Capital of Oldtime Mountain Music and is proud to be identified as hosting the worlds oldest and largest fiddlers convention which has taken place consistently since 1935.

    Abingdon - Aug 1-10 - Virginia Highlands Festival - Named "Best Art Event" in the region by readers of Virginia Living magazine, the Festival offers activities and entertainment for the whole family.

    Floyd - Aug 9 - Black Dog Summer Music Festival features two nationally recognized bands performing at an outdoor festival.  A selection of Virginia Wineries, diverse food venders, artists and artisans are also included

    Rocky Mount - Aug 15-16 - The 15th Annual Warren Street Festival is a celebration of Warren Street and its history in Franklin County. The two-day festival at the Rocky Mount Farmers' Market includes food, gospel and R&B music, activities, and a car show and parade.

    Hillsville - Aug 20-24 - Carroll County Fair - The yearly fair features agricultural events as well as as carnival rides, storytelling, beauty pageants, and more.

    Independence - Aug 23 - Grayson Wine Festival - Spend the evening on the lawn of the beautiful 1908 Courthouse enjoying the tastes and sounds of the Grayson Wine Festival.

    Mouth of Wilson - Aug 30 - Albert Hash Memorial Festival - The festival is held in the honor of Albert L. Hash, beloved fiddler and luthier. Along with performances and instrument making displays, there will be local crafts, concessions, a farmers' market, cake walks and plenty of dancing.
