Unparalleled Beauty

Chincoteague Island

Visit the Shore's sister islands of Chincoteague and Assateague. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge includes more than 14,000 acres of marshland, beaches and dunes. Wildlife is abundant here  ̶  majestic waterfowl dive for fish alongside the legendary wild ponies. Tom's Cove's beautiful view of the Assateague Lighthouse is set against expansive marshland. Access the 37-mile Assateague National Seashore in Virginia from beachside parking or a paved bicycle trail. In addition to maintaining one of the last undeveloped beaches on the East Coast, Assateague National Seashore operates two visitor centers and miles of hiking trails. Visit in July for the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction, where saltwater cowboys round up the ponies and swim them across a channel from Assateague to Chincoteague. Broaden the experience by enjoying the charm of delightful resort hotels, B&B's and restaurants that serve locally caught seafood.  Eco-tours and island cruises, camping, crabbing, fishing, kayaking, hiking, bicycling and family sporting activities add to the fun. Shop for local paintings and decoy carvings and take in musical performances, theater and film out of doors or in a renovated 1920 movie house where you can see the hoof prints of equine film star Misty in the entrance sidewalk.
