Located along Route 151 in southern Nelson County, the Piney River community is named for the Piney River that passes through the area and is a tributary of the Tye River.  Several ores were discovered that led to large-scale mining operation and plenty of economic opportunity for the local residents with the opening of the American Cynamid Plant, that at one time produced titanium dioxide to be used in paint and other products. The Blue Ridge Railroad, a spur of the mainland that carried timber from the mountains and locally produced products, had the main office and station at Piney River.  The railroad no longer exists but Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail follows the railroad bed along the Piney River.  The trail begins at Piney River with ample parking and easy access to the trail.
Saunders Brothers Farm Market and Nursery on Route 56 is open seasonally for peaches, apples, plants, and other local produce.
