On the banks of the Tye River and at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains is the small community of Tyro. The Massie family, one of the first settlers to the area, established a mill that dates back to 1830. The five-story Tyro Mill still stands although not open to the public.
Silver Creek and Seaman Orchards is located at Tyro with a large processing plant and seasonal retail market for apples. Each fall the orchard hosts apple festivals on selected weekends.
The Appalachian Trail descends from two high peaks on the Blue Ridge, The Priest to the south and Three Ridges from the north, and crosses a swinging footbridge over Tye River at Harper’s Creek.
