Rockbridge County is centrally located with the historic and scenic Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. It is bounded to the west by the lower elevations of the Allegheny Mountains and by the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east.

Lexington is one of the major cities in Rockbridge County and is home to Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. The colleges provide cultural, sporting and historical events, such as the Battle of New Market Reenactment.

History buffs can find more than 100 culturally and historically significant sites throughout the county, such as natural Bridge of Virginia, the Cyrus McCormick Farm, Lee Chapel and the Stonewall Jackson House. Rockbridge County also is home to the Virginia Horse Center, a 361-acre site that presents year-around equine events.
