Looking for miles of colorful countryside, Civil War trails, vista overlooks, rivers, parks, and small town charm? A place where family car trips and weekend getaways are closer than you think? Discover Luray!
It is known that some of the best fall foliage in the Shenandoah Valley can be seen from Shenandoah National Park, host to Skyline Drive, during the second or third week of October. This drive stretches from north to south along a 105-mile crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some 75 vista overlooks with expansive views and 500 miles of hiking trials, including the famous Appalachian Trail, provides leaf peepers a National Park experience complete with visitor centers, exhibits, and ranger programs. Guided hikes are also available.
While visiting in the Shenandoah Valley, plan to stay in the quaint town of Luray. Enjoy the elegant accommodations of The Mimslyn Inn where 45 guest rooms, two restaurants, day spa and event space provide a stunning backdrop against a vivid fall setting. South Court Inn Bed & Breakfast and Luray Caverns Motel are also pleasant accommodations in Luray. Recommended dining on your first night, The Speakeasy Bar and Restaurant, located at The Mimslyn Inn.
Imagine colorful foliage seen from a canoe ride along the Shenandoah River. Explore the country roads throughout Page County on your bike or combine a bike and paddle ride for an all day fall experience. A packed lunch and other road snacks are available in downtown Luray.
Unwind from the day's activities in the relaxing heated outdoor pool at The Mimslyn Inn, followed by a stroll down Main Street. Enjoy dinner at Circa '31, located at The Mimslyn Inn, before taking in a live show or music at Performing Arts Luray.
Enjoy the cool fall air and take pleasure in exploring the quaint town. Luray-Hawksbill Greenway, a designated Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail and Bird Sanctuary, follows a creek on a 4-mile paved walking and biking loop with convenient entry and footbridge locations off Luray's Main Street. Plan to lunch at West Main Market, and browse antique, boutique, and outdoor stores nearby. Before departing the area, take the hour-long tour of famous Luray Caverns and another local favorite, the Luray Rescue Zoo.
