MAD about Chocolate, a chocolate cafe and art gallery, is owned and operated by four-time James Beard Award-winner Marcel Desaulniers (author of Death by Chocolate and 9 other cookbooks) and his artist wife Connie. The cafe features Marcel's abundant cookies, as well as desserts, brownies ice cream, MAD-made candies and tarts. The cafe also serves lunch, plus wine and beer. The walls are filled with Connie's sculptural and 2-D paintings, as well as fine crafts from around the world. The cafe is just a block from the College of William and Mary and Colonial Williamsburg's Merchant Square.
Marcel is the former chef/owner of The Trellis Restaurant, where he served award-winning food for 29 years. At the Trellis he also created the original Death by Chocolate cake. Notorious for his decadent desserts, he wrote the James Beard awarded book, Death by Chocolate, and had a TV series by the same name. Eight of his 10 cookbooks are about chocolate. After selling the Trellis in 2009, he had a short-lived retirement before chocolate's beck and call drew him back into the business. MAD about Chocolate opened April 2012.
