After borrowing money from his friend Peter Buck, Fred De Luca started his own sandwich shop in 1965 at the age of 17 in order to pay college tuition. Although the store was not located in a good location, customers lined up on the store's first day. Advertisements referred to the restaurant as "Pete's Submarines", but instead sounded like Pizza Marines. The name was changed to "Pete's Subway" and was eventually shortened to just "Subway." Today, the franchise has over 28,700 locations in 86 countries, bringing in over $9 billion of business each year.
Subway specializes in sub sandwiches, salads, wraps, soups, and other items.
