Martinsville and Henry County welcome you to a Day of History and Gardens. Martinsville is named for American Revolutionary War hero and local land owner, General Joseph Martin. Henry County is named for Revolutionary War Patriot Patrick Henry, who at one time resided in Henry County. The tour area features Stanleytown in Henry County just outside Martinsville. It showcases three elegant homes dating from the 1830s to the 1930s along with their beautiful gardens and landscaping. Two of the homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a driving and walking tour.
Built in 1824 and located seven miles from the touring area, at 1 East Main Street in Martinsville, the Historic Henry County Courthouse is a landscape restoration site of the Garden Club of Virginia using proceeds from Historic Garden Week. The Historic Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society as well as the Heritage Center & Museum.
