Richmond National Battlefield Park and its partners will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battles of Fort Harrison and New Market Heights.

Entrenched around key rail connections near Petersburg in the fall of 1864, Union and Confederate armies vied for advantage. In an effort to compel Gen. Robert E. Lee to stretch out the lines of his already diminished army, Union forces raided north across the James River and captured key elements of Richmond’s outer defenses. Ranger-led programs will explore the fierce fighting at Fort Harrison and New Market Heights, including action by African American soldiers that resulted in 14 Medals of Honor awarded to U.S. Colored Troops.

Events will take place at the park’s Fort Harrison unit. Specific details will be posted on the park’s website ( as they become available.
