Explore the diversity of life deep in the ocean’s wilderness in “Beyond the Edge of the Sea.” The exhibit highlights work by scientific illustrator Karen Jacobsen, who accompanied Dr. Cindy Lee Van Dover on many expeditions to deep-sea locations across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Dr. Van Dover, a deep-sea explorer and U.S. Navy-qualified pilot of the deep-diving submersible Alvin, curated the exhibition for the Muscarelle Museum of Art. During 20 years working in the deep sea, Dr. Van Dover has made many discoveries of species and adaptations to life in extreme environments. “In this alien world, this world beyond the edge of the sea, there live creatures that are achingly beautiful, that have lived in the abyss for untold eons. These animals are our discovery, the discovery of our century,” says Dr. Van Dover. The exhibit contains over 70 works selected from Jacobsen's sketchbooks and five specially commissioned pieces. “More than ever, I sense the dark and vast ocean that stretches beyond our pool of light and am aware that the weight of the ocean is on us. ... we may as well have landed on another planet,” Jacobsen, expeditionary illustrator.
