Classics II

Wintergreen Festival Orchestra

Erin Freeman, Conductor

Arianna Zukermand, Soprano

Schubert/Reger: Schubert Lieder

Schubert: Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished”

Barber: Knoxville: Summer of 1915

Kodaly: Dances of Galanta

Voice meets Orchestra in this celebration of one of Schubert’s most productive years – 1815. Imagine - at age 18, he wrote four musical dramas, a symphony, a string quartet, eight works for chorus and orchestra, nine piano works, and 140 songs or “Lieder,” including the tour de force Erlkönig. One century later, Max Reger orchestrated several of these songs for chamber orchestra, adding color and flair to these already perfect gems. Now, 100 years after that, we present these Lieder in performance to celebrate WPA’s 20th year, and we pair them with the music of Samuel Barber, another specialist in writing lyrical lines for the voice. The concert concludes with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony – a two-movement work that saw its premiere the year the Civil War ended – and Kodaly’s festive showstopper Dances of Galánta.
