Toss on a sweater for a "chili" day in downtown Hampton! The Five-Alarm Festival returns to Carousel Park complete with food vendors, fire safety demonstrations, children's activities, exhibitors, and more. The event will provide valuable fire and life safety information in a fun and delicious atmosphere.
Teams will put their secret chili recipes to the test beginning at noon with a public cook-off lasting until 2:30 p.m. Festival attendees can purchase tickets for 50 cents each that will entitle them to chili samples (1 ticket each). Prizes will be awarded based on the decisions of the judges. The panel of judges includes coaches from area high schools, as well as Hampton University Head Football Coach Donovan Rose.
Throughout the day, vendors will be distributing valuable safety information. Children will want to have their face painted and enjoy make-and-take activities in the festival's designated craft section. Troy Chandler of Allstate will present "Insurance 101" at 2:00 p.m., educating citizens about the different types of insurance for the home and family that can be obtained at any insurance office. At 3:00 p.m., Chef Damon Armstrong, owner of Grace 55 Catering, will perform a special cooking demonstration.
In addition to chili, food vendors will be on site selling hot dogs and hamburgers. Proceeds from chili and food sales will be used for fire prevention and public education.
