On August 9th, visitors will be able to experience this world-renowned U.S. Natural Landmark and the other attractions on the grounds of Luray Caverns in a different light as they celebrate the 136th anniversary of its discovery with a day of events, including the annual Grand Illumination. The first Grand Illumination took place in 1878, with The New York Herald reporting that a "thousand candles illuminated the antechambers making it nearly as bright as day." Experience the thrill of adventure from this bygone era as period-costumed guides tell of Luray Caverns' storied past in special candle lighted sections throughout the caverns. Tours depart frequently from 9am. to 7pm.
A final highlight in the dark evening skies will be the sights and sounds of a massive fireworks display. This spectacle will be coordinated with a recital by David Breneman from the Luray Singing Tower, a 47-bell carillon located on the event's perimeter.
