In celebration of its 35th anniversary season, Mark Morris Dance Group presents treasured gems from Mark Morris’s expansive repertoire performed by the company’s talented dancers and musicians. Since forming his Dance Group back in 1980, this consummate choreographer has been revered by audiences and praised by critics who marvel at his creations that radiate astonishing beauty, musical sophistication, and delightful wit. Hailed by The New York Times as “the most life-enhancingly musical choreographer alive,” Mark Morris is renowned for his musicality, and he continually explores the relationship between movement and music, typically using live music in the performances. The program includes the D.C. area premieres of The, set to Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major; and Whelm, set to three breathtaking piano pieces by Debussy. The Dance Group will also perform Cargo, set to Darius Milhaud’s “La Création du Monde”; and Resurrection, set to music composed by Richard Rodgers for the 1936 Broadway musical On Your Toes.“Mark Morris is a genius. His best dances...tug at us powerfully. He can align steps and music in a way that transports.” (Huffington Post)
