These extraordinary West African singers speak to the soul through their glorious voices in an evening of soul-stirring Gospel music. Founded more than six decades ago, Senegal St. Joseph Gospel Choir is a symbol of peace, hope, humanity, and brotherhood in its homeland, creating harmony between the music of the Catholic and Islamic cultures in Senegal. Each Sunday, the choir performs at a cathedral in the heart of one of Dakar’s working-class neighborhoods. The voices rise in the polyphonic sounds of traditional African songs, Gospel spirituals, and magnificent masses composed by the choir’s brilliant founder. Singing in the country’s four national languages – Wolof, Diola, Sérère, and Portuguese Creole – the choir is accompanied by African drums, guitar, and kora. Enjoy this evening of life-affirming global music from one of Africa’s most venerated vocal ensembles in their first appearance at the Center.
