Down2Earth Micro-Tours

Fred First--teacher, writer, photographer, naturalist--offers easy walking tours in the town of Floyd (1 hr) as well as on the Blue RIdge Parkway (2 hr walks.)

With a strong sense of place and a broad knowledge of Floyd County's human and natural communities, Fred will take the visitor "backstage" to reveal the stories that make Floyd County and the Blue Ridge Mountains unique.

Fred first moved from his native Alabama to Virginia in 1975 and has lived in Floyd County since 1997. Since retiring from careers as biology teacher, then physical therapist, First has used photography and writing to explore the WHERE of his life. He has two non-fiction books of stories and essays from his intentional rural lifestyle and offers photographic note cards available locally. He writes regularly since 2002 on this photo-blog, Fragments from Floyd.

Fred penned a wide-ranging bimonthly column for 7 years in the Floyd Press and has contributed regular radio essays to the NPR station--WVTF--in Roanoke. He lead wildflower and fern field trips at the Mt Rogers Naturalist rally for 11 years and has guided many groups in and around Floyd County since then. Now, he looks forward to sharing his broad experience and knowledge of this place by offering Down2Earth services.
