Alexandria National Cemetery was first established in 1862 as Soldiers' Cemetery, one of the earliest sites dedicated by President Abraham Lincoln to serve as military burial grounds. Today it holds the remains of more than 4,200 people including Civil War soldiers, among them members of the United States Colored Troops and four men who lost their lives while in pursuit of President Lincoln's assassin. Alexandria National Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Hours: Sunrise to Sunset
