Bruton Parish Church, one of the area's oldest churches, was used as a hospital before, during and after the Battle of Williamsburg. The cemetery contains the remains of both Confederate and Union soldiers. Paymaster James Semple, who served on the CSS Virginia during its duel with the USS Monitor, is buried here.
