Kitty Payne, born a daughter of her owner, lived in the county, married and raised a family here. Supposedly emancipated by a later owner, she and her family lived in Gettysburg until kidnapped and brought back to the county as slaves. She escaped and went back to Gettysburg. She married Abraham Brian who eventually bought a farm on Cemetery Ridge which was a focal point of the battle there.
