Mount Airy, the ancestral home of the Tayloe family, is located in the Northern Neck of Virginia overlooking the Rappahannock River. Built by Col. John Tayloe II (completed 1758) the home was built, first and foremost, as a stud horse farm importing and siring many of the finest horses of the day; including, Diomed, Sir Archy and Selima. The great home once played host to General and Mrs. George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette and his wife Marie and has welcomed presidents, senators, and diplomats from across the world to view its architectural design and enjoy its many comforts for close to three hundred years. Francis Lightfoot Lee, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his wife Rebecca Tayloe are buried here. Menokin and Stratford Hall are located nearby as is the George Washington birthplace. George Washington and John Tayloe III were close associates and it was Washington who urged Tayloe to begin construction on a city home, the Octagon House, located off Lafeyette Square in Washington, D.C.

The home remains private but does provide Saturday afternoon tours at 3:00 pm with reservations required ahead of time by calling (804) 301-7976 or (804) 333-4930. The home is also available for booking gala events, weddings and corporate dinners as well as offering guided waterfowl and upland bird hunting.
