This African-American History Museum of Public Education was built in 1932 as an addition to an original Rosenwald School, one of 5,000 built across the south to educate black children. The building was originally located in Chuckatuck, in the eastern part of Isle of wight County, but was moved to its present location in Historic Downtown Smithfield in 2008. The museum has been lovingly restored and features period desks and books, and offers oral histories of those who attended the school. Open Wednesday - Saturday 12:00 noon- 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. -5:00 pm and can be open at other times by appointment.
