From soldiers and generals to civilian parents and children--in the Shenandoah Valley Americans experienced the full measure of war. Created by Congress to protect and interpret the Valley's Civil War story, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District includes 14 significant Civil War battlefields and a wide variety of related historic sites across eight counties. Here visitors can explore the campaigns of Stonewall Jackson and Philip Sheridan and the effect of those campaigns on the civilian population. Visitor centers throughout the Valley can help you find your way to the region's numerous Civil War sites.
