Founded in 1839, Virginia Military Institute is the nation's oldest state-supported military college. “Stonewall” Jackson taught here and the museum has many items related to his Civil War years, including the mounted hide of his horse, Little Sorrel. The 12-acre parade ground is dominated by the Barracks which is a National Historic Landmark. Free tours of the VMI campus are conducted by cadets year round (please call to confirm, cadets are not available during holidays). Tours begin at the VMI Museum, Jackson Memorial Hall, daily at noon. Dress parades are held throughout the school year on Fridays at 4:15, weather permitting.
