The Weems-Botts House offers a fascinating history on Virginia's oldest chartered town, Dumfries, in addition to two of the more colorful personalities to have lived here: Mason Weems and Benjamin Botts. Weems, the first biographer of George Washington, was the creator of the famous cherry tree myth and initially used the museum building as a bookstore. By contrast, attorney Botts, best remembered as a member of Aaron Burr's defense team during Burr's infamous treason and conspiracy trial, used the building as his law office. In addition to covering Dumfries' crucial role in the Revolutionary War, the tour discusses the interesting and tragic history of the Merchant Family, who owned and expanded the house in the Victorian Era and are said to be actively haunting it today. Tour starts at the Annex. Fascinating, fun & family-friendly!
