Built by George Washington Custis, grandson of Martha Washington by her first marriage to Daniel Park Custis, Arlington House is located in Arlington National Cemetery, and was home of the Confederate General Robert E. Lee in the years leading up to the Civil War. Here, in 1861, Lee wrote the letter resigning his commission from the U.S. Army to fight for his native Virginia.

Arlington House is open to visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exception of January 1st and December 25th when Arlington National Cemetery is also closed. Visits are first-come, first-served. There may be a delay on busier days.

NOTE: Arlington House is empty of furnishings for major restoration and rehabilitation, as of 2008. Please call ahead to ensure the house will be open on the day of your visit. Completion targeted for 2010.
