Most of Shenandoah National Park is open to backcountry camping. Permits are required and are available free from Park Headquarters, visitor centers, Thornton Gap Information Center and entrance stations. Seven trailside huts are operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Other trail shelters are for day use only.
