Located in downtown Newport News, Christopher Newport Park is a small urban park with floral gardens, historic markers and a statue of Collis P. Huntington, who brought two major industries to Newport News in the late 1800s - the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Today, the Newport News shipyard builds nuclear aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.

Also in the park is the Congress-Cumberland Overlook, commemorating the March 8, 1862 Civil War battle between these two wooden Union ships and the Confederacy's ironclad Virginia. Converted from the USS Merrimack, the CSS Virginia quickly sank the USS Cumberland and the USS Congress soon surrendered. One day later, the CSS Virginia would engage the USS Monitor in battle - the first ever battle between ironclad ships.
