Located on Old Point Comfort where the Hampton Roads harbor meets the Chesapeake Bay, Fort Monroe served as an Army installation with a rich cultural and military history until September 15, 2011.

Fort Monroe National Monument spans the American story from the 17th to the 21st centuries: Captain John Smith's journeys, a haven of freedom for the enslaved during the Civil War, and a bastion of defense for the Chesapeake Bay.

There are many ways to explore tha largest stone fort ever built in the U.S. and the 400-year history of the site traced since the first colonists' arrival in 1607. The Casemate Museum is open daily from 10:30a.m.-4:30p.m., is free, and is a great showcase of the fort's history. Take a walking tour using the Civil War Sites Guide or walking tour brochure; or enjoy the iPod tour or Smartphone App, both available at visithampton.com. Both podcast and app provide multimedia interpretation of Fort Monroe with historic images, entertaining interviews, and period music. The Fort Monroe Geocache Hunt is a fun way to familiarize yourself with Old Point Comfort history and you get a prize when you complete the puzzle!
