More than 130 years ago, Union and Confederate soldiers marched the dusty backroads of Central Virginia. Now you are invited to follow in the footsteps of Lee and Grant by travelling along General Grant's "1864 Campaign." Part of Virginia's Civil War Trails, this driving tour through central Virginia follows the 1864 overland campaign and includes many other important Civil War sites. When Grant's Union army crossed the Rapidan River in May, 1864, Lee's under-manned Confederate troops moved quickly to engage them. The Union forces, though consistently repelled, continued south toward Richmond and Petersburg. Confederate troops mirrored the Union descent, meeting them in some of the most fierce battles of the war.In Richmond, see the finest collection of Civil War weapons at the Virginia Historical Society.
