A suspension style walking bridge with wooden planks crosses the James River parellel to Main Street in Buchanan. Walkers and hikers are treated to spectacular views of Purgatory Mountain to the west and the Blue Ridge mountains to the east. Cleanup efforts following a recent flood uncovered a previously unseen portion of the original rock wall boundary of the river. The community is progressively removing dirt from this historic area which winds around to the site of a lock, soon to be excavated. This work is best viewed from the bridge. Several hundred feet away are three restaurants and a coffee shop as well as quaint shops and exciting historic building restorations. The town is currently seeking National Register designation.
