Wreck Island is part of Virginia's Atlantic coast barrier island chain. This pristine island preserve consists of beach, dune, maritime grassland/shrubland, salt flat and salt marsh habitats. Dune-like mounds of ancient shells parallel much of the beach. The preserve can only be accessed by boat. It is open to the public Sept. 1 -April 14, which includes prime surf fishing periods. The preserve is closed to all visitation from April 15 -Aug. 31 to protect nesting birds. Hunting, camping, fires and unleashed dogs are prohibited year-round.

Wreck Island is near the southern terminus of the chain of barrier islands along Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The nearest public boat ramp is about seven miles to the west in the town of Oyster. To reach Oyster, take US Rt 13 to Bus. Rt 13 near Cheriton. From Bus. 13 take Rt 639 east 2.5 miles into Oyster.
