For today's transportation, take the free King Street Trolley that runs up and down the main street of Old Town from the King Street Metro station to the waterfront. The Trolley runs from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and stops every couple of blocks.

Obtain your Key to the City pass at the Alexandria Visitor Center. It provides free admission to the following attractions, plus more than 60 special dining and shopping offers.

Alexandria Black History Museum - a site documenting Alexandria's African-American contributions from 1749 to today.

Alexandria Archaeology Museum - home to a 13,000-year-old stone spear point.

Carlyle House Historic Park - where five royal governors and General Braddock met to discuss funding the French and Indian War.

Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site - the best preserved fort in the system and protector of Washington, D.C. during the Civil War.

Friendship Firehouse Museum - an 1855 firehouse with antique firefighting equipment and exhibits.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum - two 18th century buildings (tavern and the hotel) which played guests to the likes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden - once home to 37 members of the Lee family and now interpreting the 1850-1870 time frame.

The Lyceum: Alexandria's History Museum - telling Alexandria's storied port history with artifacts, photography, and more.

Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum - a 1792 pharmaceutical with over 8,000 early medical care items in place.
