2 Days | Late Spring to Late Fall
Arrive early to catch a world-class children's theatre performance at the historic Barter Theatre. Not just for kids, you'll find yourself laughing and cheering on your favorite classic childhood characters. After the show lunch is literally just steps away at Bob's at Barter. Then check-in to one of our family-friendly hotels - Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Suites to settle in and have a quick nap. Each hotel boasts a free hot breakfast, outdoor pool and free parking.
When you're ready, drive out to Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, VA. Walk the lake trail, hike up the mountain, rent a paddle boat or just lay out on the beach at one of Virginia's most beautiful state parks. After your long day of outdoor fun, head back to Abingdon for a local dinner at Bella's Pizza - sit out on the back patio for some of the best pizza in the region and a great selection of craft beers. Hint - try the Syrian Pizza! From there you are only a hop, skip and a jump away from the Abingdon Cinemall, where you can end the day with a movie or a little play time in the arcade.
Start your day with a cup of coffee and a bit of breakfast at Zazzy'z on Main St. With coffee roasted on-site and plenty of treats to choose from this is the perfect place to start your day. Then stroll downtown to visit the Abingdon Farmer's Market (Saturdays) or to do a little window shopping. Make sure to visit William King Museum, which offers free admission and children's art activities. Get ready for lunch at Pop Ellis' Soda Shoppe - located in a renovated pharmacy, you'll enjoy a menu of unique sandwiches and old-fashioned sodas and milkshakes.
Afterwards take a walk on the Virginia Creeper Trail or stop by one of Abingdon's parks to let the kids burn off some steam - try the Coomes Recreation Center. With a fantastic playground, skate park and outdoor walking trail, there is something for everyone. Before heading out of town, take a short scenic drive out to historic White's Mill. This working mill offers free tours, and the mercantile is a great place to grab a snake for the road.
