DO THE BLUE: Enjoy 75 miles of breathtaking views, magnificent foliage, outdoor recreation and unparalleled history on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Begin your day refreshed in Lynchburg at a luxurious boutique hotel, or an enchanting B & B. Start your journey at Poplar Forest, retreat home of Thomas Jefferson. Then head west to the National D-Day Memorial. This moving memorial and lush garden is located in nearby Bedford. Bring your camera to forever capture the stunning, breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As you leave the National D-Day Memorial, take a short ride up VA-43 to Peaks of Otter Winery and enjoy first-class wine tastings. Next begins your journey on the famous Blue Ridge Parkway with spectacular views of mountains, valleys, wildlife and beautiful foliage. Be sure to hike Sharp Top Mountain for unparalleled views. Touring and hiking can build an appetite so stop at the Peaks of Otter Lodge and unwind for lunch as you enjoy a delicious meal overlooking the pristine waters of Abbott Lake. After lunch, continue north on the Parkway for 24 miles of incomparable vistas. Leaving the Parkway on VA-130, plan to veer off the beaten path for a stop at Morris Orchard where you will find u-pick apples, peaches, blueberries, nectarines, corn, pumpkins, gourds and Christmas Trees. Head a few miles north and experience the Monacan Indian Village in Amherst County. Returning to Lynchburg on VA-29S, check out Old City Cemetery, a 200 year old historic landmark with a 26-acre garden cemetery, five small museums, and rose gardens that date back to the 1500’s.
