Begin your trip at the South Boston / Halifax County Visitor Center for maps, directions, brochures, information, fishing and/or hunting licenses. Open Monday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday Noon-5.

Early-risers may want to pack a lunch the night before you head out; we suggest subs or sandwiches from Italian Delight. Or breakfast at The Packhouse while they pack your sandwiches to go. Common Grounds will get you started with great gourmet coffees and pastries, as well as deli sandwiches.

Halifax County provides a tremendous variety of paddling options; each of our four rivers has distinctive character, and our two lakes and several creeks provide further unique trips.

From the Visitor Center, take 360 to Scottsburg, then MacDonald Road/VA – 344 to Staunton River State Park, which has great boat ramp and shoreline access to Kerr Lake Reservoir, aka Buggs Island Lake. Kerr Lake Reservoir is Virginia's largest lake, with more than 50,000 acres of fresh water and over 800 miles of shoreline. It is also accessible in Halifax County through put-ins on tributaries.

Halifax County boasts a smaller 100 acre lake with a public boat landing, near Noland Village. Lake Conner is a great family day-trip boating destination.

See our website for detailed river charts showing mileages, important physical features, and historical facts on all of the Halifax County waterways and lakes.

Spend your afternoon enjoying a canoe or kayak adventure. Visit River Traders for all of your canoe or kayak needs.

Once back on dry land, fortify yourself with libations, appetizers, dinner, or all of the above at Bistro 1888. Another option is some home-cooking at Ernie's Restaurant.

After a fun day on the water, check in at  one of Halifax County's many accommodation selections, ranging from quaint to luxurious. Details and suggestions may be found on our website.

See Frequently Asked Questions section for more boat ramp and boat rental information.

Day Two:

Get up and do it again! Early risers will find breakfast fuel at Ollie's Southern Café, open Thursday through Sunday 5:00am – 11:30am with everything from grits & gravy to pancakes with corned beef hash. Smokin' Jake's will put a tasty, barbeque spin on your breakfast; breakfast buffet served from 7:30am.

Head back to a favorite paddle trip, or explore and discover a new one. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center before you head home; we'd love to hear stories of your adventure and help you plan your next one!
