Smithfield, incorporated in 1752, maintains its quaint river town feel & is known worldwide for its famous ham curing process. Smithfield's historic district is the perfect "park & go" destination.

Shopping & Art: Begin your visit to Smithfield at the Visitor Center - also home to the Arts Center @ 319 - offering tourist information, a gallery/gift shop & the chance to chat with resident artists. Be sure to pick up a map and brochure on the town's Porcine Parade - eight life-size statues of market hogs, painted by local artists to reflect an aspect of the town's rich history, culture & recreation. Also ask for a Passport to Savings discount card for area merchants before heading off to browse the unique shops & galleries of Smithfield's historic district, including the Taste of Smithfield – Smithfield Foods' flagship café and gourmet grocery & Wharf Hill Antiques. Further down Church Street are the new Boardwalk Shops at Smithfield Station.

History: The Isle of Wight County Museum, offers an overview of the county's history & the world's oldest ham, an example of Smithfield's famous ham curing process. Across the street is the Old Courthouse of 1750, modeled after the Capitol Building in Colonial Williamsburg. The Olde Towne Walking Tour of the Historic Downtown District boasts over 50 historic buildings exuding the charm of bygone eras.

Events: Plan your trip around our local events & concerts including Smithfield Wine & Brew Fest, Smithfield Farmers Market, Friday night summer concert series, Aiken & Friends Music Fest, Smithfield Olden Days Festival, Smithfield Music concerts or the "Sundays at Four" Concert Series.
