The growing season begins in May and doesn’t end until November. More than 40 varieties of apples and peaches are grown in Nelson County. In the spring, fruit blossoms paint the mountainsides and valleys in clouds of pink and white. Strawberries begin the pick-your-own season in May. Peaches are available in mid-June through September and apples are ready for in mid August. Festivals celebrating the bountiful harvest of the local farms are held year round at the orchards. With Ten wineries and three breweries, there are events every weekend for the entire family. The Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford focuses on local food and crafts, Saturday  morning May-September. Dickie Brothers Orchard is a Virginia's Century Farm. Varieties include: Gala, Paulared, McIntosh, Red/Golden Delicious, Empire, Winesap, Stayman, Rome, Granny Smith, Fuji. Pick-your-own apples are available every day; pick-your-own pumpkins are available in October. The packing shed retail store features local cider and apple butter. Drumheller's Orchard showcases Red/Golden Delicious, Stayman, Winesap, Rome, York, Granny Smith, Albermarle Pippin, pumpkins, cider, apple butter and honey. Drumhellers love school tours. Edible Landscaping is located high in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Afton. There you can find plants and trees that produce edible food - berries, nuts, fruits and herbs. Seaman and Silver Creek Orchards Packing Shed features Empire, Gala, Jonathan, Red and Golden Delicious, York, Winesap, Red Rome, Stayman, Pippin, Jonagold and Pink Lady® apples. Also available are apple butter, cider, baskets, honey, jellies, pumpkins and gifts. Saunders Brothers Orchard boasts an Antique Farm Equipment Museum.
