Nan Rothwell has been making functional salt glazed and stoneware pots in Virginia since 1973. Originally trained in England, Nan has melded the British studio pottery tradition with the influences of Early American salt ware to create straightforward functional pots. Her pots are made to be used – to enhance the rituals of preparing and eating food, to hold flowers, to light a corner for reading. Nan also teaches weekly pottery classes and occasional weekend workshops at her studio.
You're invited to visit Nan Rothwell Pottery, where you can see the kilns and the work in progress, and then browse a showroom of finished work. The studio, which is near Nellysford in Nelson County, sits on a lovely knoll overlooking the Rockfish River. It is open Tuesday - Saturday and by appointment on Sundays and Mondays. Since the showroom functions on an honor system, you do not need to make a reservation. If Nan is there, she will be happy to show you around. If she is not available, you are welcome to explore on your own.
For information on the studio and directions, visit NanRothwellPottery.com or call 434-263-4023.
