The Big Stone Gap Walking Tour includes 14 points of interest. Four of the buildings on the tour are Virginia and National Historical Landmarks and many of the homes passed on the tour are Victorian Era architecture. The town was originally named "Three Forks" because of the town's location at three forks of the Powell River. Later it became known as "Mineral City" because of the large deposits of coal and iron ore. Virginia's longest running outdoor drama, "Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama" is staged here from the end of June through Labor Day weekend. Much of the town's history is related to John Fox, Jr., who was the author of the novel, "Trail of the Lonesome Pine." Walking/Driving tour brochures are available at stop #1, the 101 Tourist and Information Car. Tour takes approximately 1 hour to walk and 25 minutes to drive.
