ACHS offers two themed tours of Oakwood Cemetery: The Interred of Oakwood and Iconography in Oakwood.
Cemeteries are virtual encyclopedias of symbolism. Engravings on tombstones, mausoleums and memorials tell us just about everything there is to know about a person- date of birth and death as well as religion, ethnicity, occupation, community interests, and much more. Join ACHS for a tour through Oakwood Cemeteries to learn about the language of cemetery symbols or learn about the lives of Charlottesville’s citizens, both prominent and notorious who now rest in Oakwood.
Tour begins at the entrance on Oak and 1st Street S.
Cost is $5/person. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.albemarlehistory.org/ or at the start of the tour.
Schedule: Fridays @ 7:00 pm (The Interred of Oakwood only) and Sundays @ 3pm
