"Loudoun's Civil War Rallying Point" offers a self-guided tour through the Civil War-related sites of the county, located just 25 miles west of DC and centrally located to the Civil War sites of the mid-Atlantic region, including Manassas, Gettysburg, and Antietam. The tour begins at Morven Park, the site of a Confederate encampment and an 1862 skirmish that cleared the way for Lee's army to cross the Potomac into Maryland. At Morven Park, visitors will hear stories about the war in Loudoun County, get information about the area, watch videos, and obtain a map of all the county's Civil War sites. The tour includes visits to significant battle sites, including the 1861 Battle of Ball's Bluff, the 1862 Loudoun Valley Campaign and battle of Unison, and the 1863 Cavalry Battles at Upperville, Middleburg and Aldie. Meet Civil War personalities including John Singleton Mosby, called the "Gray Ghost of the Confederacy" for his daring nighttime raids on Federal supply, transportation and communication routes. Morven Park, 17263 Southern Planter Lane, Leesburg, VA 20176. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 703-777-2414, ext. 6625.
