Costumed guides relate the stories of the courageous and hospitable women of New Market before, after, and during the Battle of New Market, May 15, 1864. Stroll the timeworn streets of the Historic District of New Market and find out what daily life was like for five women who lived on Congress St: Jessie Rupert, Union Sympathizer and teacher of African-American children, Mother Crim, Confederate heroine and nurse of the wounded VMI cadets, Anna Maria Henkel protector of her eight children, Lucinda Rice, doctor's wife and her enslaved woman, Eliza Branner, who helped save her mistress's children on the eve of the Battle of New Market.
