Explore the Beauty of Southern Virginia: Lake Gaston, Clarksville on the Lake, and South Boston
It’s time to experience ultimate romance “Southern” style. Grab your hiking boots, life jacket, and sense of adventure as you explore Southern Virginia through scenic drives, visiting our local wineries, incredible eateries, fall foliage on nature hikes, and around the lake in Virginia’s only lakeside town.

Day 1:
in Clarksville. Before you begin, order a gourmet picnic basket from
Cooper’s Landing Inn & Traveler’s Tavern filled with local wine and delectable treats from Cooper’s chef ... maybe homemade pumpkin bread and roasted turkey croissants? Stroll through Virginia’s only lakeside downtown -
Clarksville. Four blocks away, visit
Clarksville Marina where you will board your private pontoon boat and spend the day exploring
Kerr Lake where the leaves change in beautiful autumn rings around the shoreline. After your morning on the lake, head to
Occoneechee State Park, one mile away, where you can explore the Panhandle Multi-use Trail and be amazed by the cool breezes coming off the lake as you finish your hike. Jump back in the car to head to
Prestwould Plantation, built in the 1790’s by Sir Peyton Skipwith and now a National Historic Landmark. Linger over the lawns and picnic next to original outbuildings. Continue your drive to
MacCallum More Gardens in Chase City where the organically maintained botanical gardens, arboretum and wildlife sanctuary contain beautiful meandering paths. Finish your day with a back roads country drive to
Bistro 1888 in South Boston where you will amazed with their infused new American cuisine amid candlelight.

Day 2:
From Kerr Lake to Lake Gaston. Continue exploring all the beauty of Lake Country by land as you drive through the picturesque town of Boydton and visit
The Boyd Tavern, a circa 1790 tavern. Continue past old plantation homes and tobacco fields as you wind through the country to Kerr Dam. After exploring the dam and visiting the public beaches along the shoreline, be sure to explore the 1 2/3 mile Liberty Nature Trail where you will hike along
Lake Gaston and mature hardwoods. Next, visit
Rosemont Winery in Lacrosse where you can taste their 11 wines, sit on the porch and enjoy a slow blowing country breeze. For the non-wine drinkers, head over to
CornerStone Livestock Farm and take a horseback trail ride.

Day 3:
South Boston & Halifax. Spend the day on the Virginia Scenic Byway of River Road where you can see old historic homes from the tobacco era. Spend time at
Cage’s Sculpture Farm strolling around beautiful ponds and life-size works of art. Finish the afternoon with a tour of
Bright Meadows Farm Winery and head to the historic village of Halifax for upscale southern-inspired cuisine at
Molasses Grill. After dinner, be sure to check out the musical performances or theatre productions at
The Prizery.
