Touring & Tasting DC’s Wine Country®

Explore Loudoun, Virginia: DC’s Wine Country® with visits to three of our 40 wineries, dine at some of our farm-to-table restaurants, stroll through a few of our historic small towns, and experience the beauty of the county along our scenic byways.

Day 1

Begin your adventure in historic Leesburg at South Street Under. Located in Market Station, next to the Loudoun Visitors Center, South Street offers baked goods and breakfast fare, along with that all-important cup of coffee. Spend some time exploring Leesburg’s cute historic district, filled with 18th century buildings housing quaint shops and boutiques, and lined with brick sidewalks. Pick up some pie and other baked goods for friends back home at Mom’s Apple Pie.

Next, head out to the wineries. First stop: Sunset Hills Vineyard. The 130-year-old barn turned impressive tasting room has been lovingly restored by master Amish carpenters from Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Although relatively new to the Loudoun wine scene, Sunset Hills is already garnering attention for their Cabernet Franc and Viognier. Enjoy your visit by relaxing near the fireplace in the loft or on either of the two decks overlooking the vineyards and bucolic scenery.

After your wine tasting, head down the road to Purcellville to one of Loudoun’s destination restaurants, Magnolia’s at the Mill. Set in a 100-year-old restored grain mill, Magnolia’s offers a buoyant vibe with its open kitchen, creative menu, and attentive staff. Savor specialties such as their lacquered salmon or grilled Tuscan steak sandwich. The atmosphere is accented by subtle lighting illuminating antique mill machinery and wood beams.

Following lunch, head back out on your wine adventure. Next stop, Breaux Vineyards. Enjoy award-winning wines in the " Mediterranean meets Napa" style tasting room. The 404 acre estate, with more than 80 acres of vineyards, offers beautiful vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After your tasting, relax and enjoy an exploration of Loudoun’s scenic byways.

For dinner, enjoy European inspired farm-to-table cuisine at The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm. Situated on a picturesque hillside, this 110-seat restaurant is perched in an elegant glass conservatory that is heated and air-conditioned, with a view of a beautiful bend in the Potomac River. The farm provides produce for the restaurant. The chef and grower combine their talents to produce wholesome meals utilizing just-picked ingredients and serving them in a relaxing setting.

Sleep in luxury at Lansdowne Resort in Lansdowne or Briar Patch B&B in Middleburg.

Day 2

Begin your day exploring the “capital of Virginia’s horse country,” Middleburg. Having a mystique all its own, Middleburg has been the playground for the well-to-do for more than a century. F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jackie Kennedy are just a few who made Middleburg a frequent destination of choice. Today, the town offers visitors rich boutiques and charming character. For lunch, enjoy a singular Virginia experience at the Red Fox Inn. As the oldest continually operated tavern and inn in the country, it has a long history and tradition for hospitality. Don’t miss their peanut soup!

After lunch, head east to Chrysalis Vineyards. This 400 acre estate offers magnificent views of the surrounding Bull Run Mountains, a lovely stone patio, and Norton wine, made from the Virginia-native grape.

End your day back in historic Leesburg at either Lightfoot Restaurant, a historic bank turned elegant award-winning restaurant, or at The Wine Kitchen, which offers small plates accompanied by flights of 3 wines from around the county, country, and world.

Day 3

Finish off your stay with a visit to one of our great places to enjoy views with historic flavor. The circa-1804 Oatlands Historic House and Gardens provide visitors a great opportunity to stroll through a historic home that offers splendid views of the Virginia Piedmont. Or, visit Ball’s Bluff Battlefield, with its Potomac overlook and wooded trails.
