Virginia Battle Reenactments

    More major Civil War battles took place in Virginia than in any other state.

    Witness battles, ask questions and/or participate in the camp life of soldiers and their families. Although fewer, Revolutionary War buffs can find reenactments, too, as well as WWI and WWII commemorations!

    Central Virginia

    Petersburg - Apr 20-21 - 232nd Anniversary of the 1781 Battle of Petersburg Reenactment - More than 100 reenactors portraying American, British and German troops will camp on the grounds of Battersea for the weekend. This historic weekend event will provide the public with the opportunity to experience and learn about the soldiers who fought in the American Revolution.

      

    Northern Virginia

    Spotsylvania - May 19-20 - Spotsylvania Civil War Weekend and Reenactment - Civil War Reenactment in the heart of Spotsylvania County's Historic Courthouse Area. Learn about life in the 1860's with historic interpreters demonstrating homelife activities. Tour the camps and stay for the battle. 

    Fredericksburg - Dec 8-9 - Battle of Fredericksburg Commemoration/Reenactment - Educational, living history, and reenactment events will be held in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia to include Ferry Farm in Stafford County and the Slaughter Pen Farm in Spotsylvania County. The reenactment portion will include a crossing of the Rappahannock River and street fighting culminating in an assault on Marye's Heights will take place in the City of Fredericksburg. The organizers pledge to bring to life a historically accurate, safely conducted event that honors the original participants.

    Bristow - Oct 15 - Battle of Bristoe Station 150th Commemorative Weekend and Virginia History Mobile - Join Bristoe Station Battlefield Park staff on the 150th Anniversary of the battle for exclusive tours of the battlefield and sites outside of the Park. Tours will take place “in historic time” of the events in 1863.

      

    Shenandoah Valley

    Buchanan - Apr 26-28 - Buchanan Civil War History Weekend - See the flash, smell the smoke and witness the reenactment of General McCausland and his confederate troops fighting to secure the bridge delaying General Hunters fiery Raid of the Valley. Stroll through living history camps and Sutler's Row, or take part in a camp dance and period church service. See a street skirmish and more.

    New Market - May 19-20- 148th Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of New Market - An annual Anniversary Reenactment of the Battle of New Market, fought May 15, 1864. Emphasis is on the role of the Virginia Military Institute Cadets in the battle. Combat scenarios each day, other living history presentations throughout the weekend.

    Middletown - Oct 19-20 - Re-Enactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek - Come see the re-enactment of a vital Civil War battle that took place in the breadbasket of the Confederacy, the Shenandoah Valley.

      

    Southern Virginia

    Axton - June 1-2 - 3rd Annual Civil War Reenactment - Sons of Confederate Veterans Stuart-Hairston Camp 515 invite you to join them at the Smith River Sports Complex, with more than 60 acres of open fields, to witness the 2nd Battle of Martinsville, a Civil War reenactment, encampment and living history weekend.

      

    Coastal Virginia - Hampton Roads

    Charles City - May 18-19 - Civil War Reenactment at Fort Pocahontas - Reenactors from across the country will relive history by portraying Union and Confederate Infantry, including United States Colored Troops (USCTs), Cavalry, U.S. and C.S. Navy and Artillery.

    Portsmouth - Jun 8 - The Battle of Craney Island - Join us as we commemorate the War of 1812 bicentennial and the Battle of Craney Island, a fight for the town of Portsmouth and the Gosport Navy Yard in June 1813.

    Chesapeake - Dec 7-8 - Battle of Great Bridge - This two-day event is held the first weekend in December at the Great Bridge “bridge,” which is the original site of the Battle of Great Bridge Dec. 9, 1775.

     

    Chesapeake Bay

    Gloucester - Oct 19-20 - Battle of the Hook - A Revolutionary War reenactment of the 1781 Yorktown Campaign, celebrating General Washington's victory over the British Army. Historic battles will be brought to life by Revolutionary War reenactors and living historians.

      

    Heart of Appalachia

    Ewing - May 10-12, 2013 - Raid at Martin's Station - Slip into the shadows of Virginia's 1776 frontier. Tour Cherokee warrior and colonial militia camps, experience frontier fort life and buy unusual wares from 18th-century merchants and colonial traders. Observe re-enactments of frontier battles between Cherokee warriors and settlers of Martin's Station. The battles take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
