Alexandria is located in the northeastern tip of the Northern Virginia region on the banks of the Potomac River. Just across from Washington, D.C., Alexandria sits in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Shop, Dine & Celebrate on America’s Historic Main Streets

Historic Old Town Alexandria is a bustling center of retail and features a district consisting of colonial-era architecture and cobblestone streets. Just outside of Old Town are 13 large modern shopping centers, too.

Cultural actitivies abound with The Little Theater of Alexandria, the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Alexandria Choral Society and the Alexandria Community Singers. Of course, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is just across the Potomac. Alexandria also has about 123 art galleries, the popular Torpedo Factory Art Center along with The Athenaeum, home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association.

The National Park Service maintains a 17-mile paved trail along the Potomac River from Mount Vernon south of the city to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and is a source for biking, jogging and walking.

Alexandria is primarily known for its rich colonial history and includes attractions where our nation's founding fathers frequented, such as Christ Church, Gadsby's Tavern and The Lyceum Historic Site and Museum.
