Montross

The county seat of Westmoreland County, Montross is a pedestrian-friendly town on Route 3, just east of Stratford Hall, the home of Lees of Virginia, and the Birthplace of George Washington.

The Westmoreland County Museum is located in Montross, and houses American artist Charles Willson Peale's 1768 portrait of William Pitt, the British Parliamentarian who successfully advocated the repeal of the Stamp Act. Also, information on nearby attractions, such as the Civilian Conservation Corps-built Westmoreland State Park, is available at the Westmoreland County Museum.

For genealogists, Montross is home to the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society’s library, which covers the history, antiquities, and literature of the Counties of Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland, Stafford, Richmond, and King George, and is open by appointment.
