Gem of the Eastern Shore

Mallards at the WharfCapt. John Smith called the area of Onancock "the Gem of the Eastern Shore" in the 1600s. Budget Travel called it "The Coolest Town in the South." Others have said its "a town with heart." Who can disagree? With under 1500 in population, we still have a live theater, world class, award winning restaurants, and an old time movie theater that has an International Film Festival. Our art scene is unparalleled with renowned artists, craftsmen, sculptors, actors, dancers, musicians, glass blowers,...you name it. The beauty of our nature and wildlife is astounding. Take a kayak trip to a local winery or the site of an old Indian village. Sail across the Bay to the island of Tangier from our deep water port. See cranes, herons, bald eagles, falcons, hawks, osprey on the way. Many homes are Backyard Wildlife Refuges. Catch your crab from the wharf, have a drink at the Irish pub, listen to local music...ah, the Shorebilly life! Stay at an award winning Bed and Breakfast. Some are family and dog friendly. And even in a state as rich in history as Virginia, Onancock stands out. Visit the Ker Place or Watermen's Museum to learn about one of the oldest towns in Virginia. Onacock is truly the place where 'History meets Hospitality'.
