Leaf peepers can get their kicks as early as mid-October in Central Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountains that border Southern and Central Virginia turn a bit earlier, as well as those in Northern Virginia.

Southern Charm

Southern Virginia's small towns and outdoor adventures welcome you this fall. Travel Virginia Hwy. 58 through eight counties to see how fall colors heighten home-town charm. Outdoor parks and trails are ideal for biking, hiking, and camping!

Revolutionary, Civil War and Civil Rights heritage is rich in Southern Virginia, with the Virginia’s Retreat & Wilson-Kautz Trail, Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail, Staunton River Battlefield State Park and many more. Or, satisfy your need for speed at Virginia International Raceway and the Martinsville Speedway.

View from On High

Monticello Country Ballooning out of Charlottesville flies over some of Virginia's most beautiful and historic landscapes, such as the University of Virginia and Monticello.

Fall Foliage - Tree with fenceWintergreen Resort in Nelson County offers autumn chairlift rides every weekend in October, too, along with special fall-foliage field trips.

Richmond's James River Park System offers numerous opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking and wildlife-watching right in the heart of the city.

Northern Virginia Splendor

Nothing's more spectacular than the 18.5-mile Mount Vernon Trail across the Potomac River from our nation's capital. Of course, the river itself is a wonderful place to see fall colors while kayaking and canoeing.

Be sure to visit Prince William National Park with its 12,000 acres filled with meandering trails, rippling brooks and scenic forests. And drive the George Washington National Parkway in Arlington.

Northern Virginia is also known as Horse Country. Many farms are open to the public during the fall-foliage season, and equestrian sports are popular now, too.
